Montreal Eats: Sushi Momo

If you’re looking for a place in Montreal that has mastered the art of sushi, look no further than Sushi Momo. This was my second time here, and I must say I was as impressed, if not more, with how the sushi turned out as compared to my first time. My first time around, the sushi I chose were more fruity and tropical, featuring sweeter ingredients like sweet potato, strawberries and mango. This time around though, my spice threshold was really put to the test, as chefΒ Christian Manuel Ventura Alatorre whipped up some awesomely spicy sauces and vegan mayos to go with our 28 pieces of sushi πŸ˜‰ For the record, this chef has 10 years of experience working in innovative vegan cuisine, but you won’t doubt that for a second once you taste his innovative creations.

First off, we were given the warmest welcome possible and seated at a wooden table facing beautiful artwork. We were famished, so told the waiter to skip the menus and bring us whatever he recommended (#hungryhippos). He suggested the tasting menu for two, which, for 44$ (!!!), includes the following:

2 miso soups with tiny tofu cubes, enoki mushrooms and seaweed.

Spicy and perfectly tender edamame beans for sharing.

Delightful spicy vegetable imperial rolls with a sweet orange sauce.

Rolls piled high with enoki mushrooms, which lend a luscious meaty texture, and fresh and light rice paper rolls, containing cucumber, sesame and marinated radish.

Colour, texture and flavour were all on point! Sushi by Momo is truly an experience for all of your senses.

If you haven’t yet checked it out, I highly recommend you swing by trendy Sushi Momo. It does not disappoint. Plus, Sushi Momo appeals to both vegetarians and omnivores. In fact, they used to serve both vegan and conventional “fish-containing” sushi, but we are told they have been focusing on solely vegan sushi since the start of 2016, as roughly 90% of clients were coming for the plant-based goodies. This transition means they can be accessible and cater to a larger group of people – as vegan people don’t eat sushi containing fish, but omnivores can have vegan sushi sans problΓ¨me! πŸ˜‰

Let me say, this sushi is far from basic. What I love most about Sushi Momo is the incredible selection offered (there are over 80 different sushi options) and the fact that the chef makes such unique use of his ingredients, concocting the most multi-layered sauces, yielding sushi that does not beg the question “Where’s the fish?”. Β Less common ingredients like jack fruit, okra, Japanese gourd, kampyo, exotic mushrooms and asparagus are skilfully integrated into the rolls, and delicious “faux” seafoods and cheeses are cleverly used. But to taste it is to believe it. Until then, I’m sure you’ll be seeing these sushi in your dreams! I know I will πŸ˜‰ Let me know if you end up checking it out! πŸ™‚
