Seriously Selenium / Go Nutso for Brazil Nuts

Selenium. Sounds like a planet in a faraway galaxy but that, it is not, my friends. Actually, selenium is quite within reach. Selenium is a mineral, and consumption thereof has been linked to a reduction in cancer risk (especially prostate cancer), improved thyroid functioning and anti-inflammation. For these reasons, adults need 50 micrograms mg of selenium each and every day, sources ranging from lentils to barley to sunflower seeds. However, one of the best, most concentrated and natural sources of selenium are: Giselle Bundchen nuts, or should I say, Brazil nuts. Merely 1 to 2 of these “muito bem” (“very good” in Portugese) nuts per day provides you with your daily selenium need (each nut kindly providing 70-90 micrograms of selenium).

For these reasons, I recommend that everyone take 1-2 Brazil nuts every day! Isn’t that a tasty “mineral supplement” to take? Try adding crushed Brazil nuts to cereal, oatmeal, salads or even your home-made trail mix or simply make the following pudding.

Tropical chia pudding

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp chia seeds (doesn`t matter if they`re black or white)
  • 1 cup coconut water or calcium-enriched soy/almond milk
  • 1 tbsp dried coconut
  • ¼ cup dried mango
  • 5-6 Brazil nuts, in pieces

Instructions:

  1. Mix all ingredients in a cup.
  2. Let sit for 30 minutes in the fridge.
  3. Enjoy to the fullest 🙂
